London-based director Ruth Hogben is the most electrifying force in fashion on film in the world today, pushing the boundaries of what’s technically possible both in-camera and inside the edit suite. She collaborates on a regular basis with art director Simon Costin and artist Matthew Stone and has created arresting short films with Rick Owens, Gareth Pugh and Alexander McQueen, adding new dimensions to the traditional catwalk presentation for the digital age.
Hogben assisted world renowned fashion photographer Nick Knight from 2005-2009, both as his first photographic assistant and as editor of his film work for SHOWstudio. In 2009 she won the Jury Prize at the A Shaded View on Fashion Film Festival.
She is now one of the most in-demand filmmakers in the world of fashion and advertising, represented by Art + Commerce, and working with Louis Vuitton, Barneys, MAC Cosmetics and Selfridges. Some of her most recent projects include contributions to the Met show in New York: Punk, Chaos and Couture, a London Fashion Week collaboration with Nick Knight for Philip Treacy (styled by Katy England, using iconic items from Michael Jackson’s stage wardrobe) and a North African-themed film for London-based Indian designer Salon Lodha.
Last year she contributed several works to an installation at the old Selfridges Hotel in London, including a short film of Gareth Pugh recreating Liza Minnelli’s celebrated Bob Fosse routine from Cabaret.
Ruth Hogben’s work is graphic and provocative, but always beautiful.

Gareth Pugh, S/S 2011: "The energy on the day of this shoot was incredible. It was created with what I call 'The Family': designer Gareth Pugh; stylist Katie Shillingford; art director Simon Costin; make-up artist Alex Box; hair stylist Martin Cullen; artist Matthew Stone and model Nataša Vojnović. For this shoot we had a new member - the model Kristen McMenamy"
Gareth Pugh, A/W 2009: "This is the second Gareth Pugh film, and the very first that I made independently"
Fan Club/LOVE Magazine: "This film was such fun. Katie Grand [creative director on the project] has such a brilliant sense of humour. The film is light and fluffy and was a complete joy to shoot and edit. I got to shout through a megaphone while we were filming, which was probably my favourite part of the day"
Buttocks/The Fashion Body: "This was a film for SHOWstudio. Each contributor was given a part of the body to base a film on. I got the butt. Lucky me! The best part!! The lovely Ellie Grace Cumming styled and was such an inspiring collaborator. Esmé Bianco and Valeria were screaming with laughter at the playback. They really enjoyed the slow mo'
Freja/Vogue: "This was one of the first films I made with Nick Knight. Nick shot the stills on a 10x8 camera; one of the last around I think. I was loading the film in the back. We had a little video camera on the 10x8 stand so I could reangle at the same time as assisting. Freja is mesmerising and beautiful. The music is an old blues track with a serious groove"
Lost in the World/Kanye West: "Challenging is a word that comes to mind in terms of this film. I learnt a huge amount. There were constraints and there was conflict"
Monsterball Tour/Lady Gaga; "I went on Lady Gaga’s tour bus and it felt like I had run away with the circus for a few months. Lady Gaga is fantastic to collaborate with. The whole creative team really let Nick and I run wild with this film. The eating of a pig’s heart was Gaga's and Nick's idea, not mine – it’s really gross"
